Another night riding in the car and photographing (Gerald is driving). Sometimes riding in the car or taking the bus is the only time to sit and be still. A forced meditation on the road ahead. A place to think about the day ahead or what has occurred...or not.

Going nowhere, Day 209

Today was the worst snow storm we have had and I had to drive all around town for meetings. I was lucky to make it home in one piece.

Cycles, Day 179

How do you explain death to a five year old? I found the sex talk so far to be quite easy and straight forward...there are numerous age appropriate books on the subject. But death...?

Nicolai talks about death quite frequently. I think this is a fairly common occurrence for young boys. He has expressed interest in being mummified when he dies since he knows all about the process and the spiritual aspects as well. But his big question is what will happen to all his toys when he is gone? I jokingly told him that he could build a large tomb and they could be waiting for him in the afterlife. Since it worked for King Tut, my answer satisfied his question. I was thinking the other day a big portion of religion (pick one, any one) has some kind of explanation about what happens when a person dies. If I subscribed to a particular one I think the conversation would be much easier.

Blinded, Day 173

Tonight I drove home in a snow storm. It was extremely difficult to see more than a few feet in front of my car because of the way the snow was falling. It felt like I was driving in this endless blizzard. I took comfort seeing the tail lights in front of me leading the way. Although not the safest idea, I couldn't help but try to visually capture the experience.

New commute, Day 116

I will begin teaching at the University of Denver in a couple of weeks. I went down to get an introduction to the school and to figure out where I am going. In all the years I have been prostituting myself as an educator within the University system (11 years) this will be the first time I will commute to Denver. Part of me is excited to be in a new teaching environment with new people to work with and then the other part of me is weary of having to commute 3 hours round trip using public transportation to yet another location to make an even smaller paycheck. AND THEN I remind myself that I have a job, my house is not in foreclosure, and so far I am able to pay all my bills...life is good!

Going home, Day 48

I haven't posted any images from the night time hours until now. I usually like to post a bit earlier in the evening. I was photographing by the seat of my pants tonight because I didn't have an image that I liked from the day. I tell my students to have their cameras with them at all times, and this is the first time in my life I have actually begun to seriously practice what I preach. Since I began this project I have begun driving and photographing at the same time. This is probably not the best idea, but I don't look through the view finder, and I don't review the images. This is a little safer than talking on my cell phone while driving (which I do not do). Now if Canon would only make a "hands free" camera...
